SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta Board of Education will be voting to hire the next superintendent of schools on Tuesday night. Matthew L. Beck, currently Chief School Administrator for the Fredon Board of Education, is on the board of education’s agenda for Tuesday night.

The agenda indicates Beck is being offered a three-year contract to run from June 1, 2021 through June 30, 2024 with a starting salary of $189,000. No other details about the contract were made public at this time.

Board of Education President Kim Bragg announced at the end of the regular Feb. meeting there would be a special meeting on Tuesday for the purpose of hiring the new superintendent.

Beck has been the CSA in Fredon since 2018. He most recently signed a five year contract in August 2020 for $154,754.  He was due to get a 1% raise in July to $156,202.

Prior to his position in Fredon, Beck was Superintendent of Andover Regional School District from July 2016 to September 2018.  He had been the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Programs and Adult Education at Sussex County Technical High School for a year having served at that school as Director of Curriculum and Instruction from 2012 to 2015.

The board of education released a letter on Sunday night with information about Beck.  The letter said Beck began his career in education as a high school social studies teacher and JV baseball coach at East Orange School District. From there he taught elementary social studies in Fredon and then at Morris County School of Technology where he also coached JV boys soccer and varsity girls basketball for four years.

Beck has earned his master’s degree in Secondary Education from East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania and his bachelor’s degree in Criminology from Wilkes University in Pennsylvania.

Beck is currently an educational leadership doctoral candidate at Centenary University in Hackettstown.

According to the New Jersey Department of Education Fredon educates students from Pre-kindergarten through grade six.  They have approximately 197 students and an operating budget of $5,089,908 for 2020-2021.

The Sparta Board of Education's letter said Beck currently lives in Fredon with his wife Krystal and their two sons, 10-year-old Owen and 8-year-old Alex.  Krystal Beck is District Supervisor of Instructional Services for Social Studies in the Morris Hills Regional school district, according to the school’s website.

The Sparta School District officially separated with the previous superintendent Michael Rossi in December 31, 2020.  Rossi had been on a leave of absence since May, 26, 2020.  Patrick McQueeney was initially named acting Superintendent in May and has been interim Superintendent since January 1, 2021.
