SPARTA, NJ - The Sparta Chess Club will be starting its 18th season the week of October 7. Coach Thomas Murray has led the teams to many championships and trophies through the years.

Each Sparta school has a meeting time.

  • Tuesday – Sparta Middle School after school in room 217
  • Wednesday – Alpine Elementary meets before school at 8 a.m in the all purpose room,
  • Wednesday – Sparta High School meets after school in the MRC
  • Thursday – Helen Morgan meets after school in the library
  • Friday – Mohawk Avenue School meets after school in the auditorium

On October 12 the club will hold an opening day event on the Lake Mohawk Boardwalk with a giant chess set and pizza to celebrate National Chess Day. At 10 a.m. Sparta will play against Pope John. There will be intra-squad matches; Sparta Middle School at 11 a.m. and Sparta High School at noon, according to Murray.

Sparta Chess participates in many local events including New Jersey Championships. The group will also travel to Baltimore, Columbus, and Jacksonville to play in National events this school year.

The Sparta teams have won many New Jersey and Regional Championships, including two New Jersey Kindergarten Championships. The team has visited 17 states.

“Chess develops critical thinking and logic skills and promotes increased reasoning ability,” Murray said. “Why isn't your child playing chess.”
