SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta field hockey team defeated Chatham 3-1 on Wednesday at Cassels field. The Spartans battled from whistle to whistle getting by the Cougars goalie twice in the first half and once in the second.
“We played really well,” Captain Allie McGuire said. “We’ve definitely been working hard especially on the front line after the loses we’ve had.”
Captain Taylor Canfield agreed. “We’ve been working to make the forward line better.”
Lauren Groff, Haley Capeci and Yasmeen Caswell each scored and Capeci earned an assist.
Morgan Denmead had 15 saves.
“JV and varsity work together as one large team, with no division,” McGuire said. “That really helps.”
The girls record is now 3-3. The games have all been close, within one point. The captains said they know they are playing more to their potential and expect to play stronger as the season goes on.
They are also “looking forward to playing under the lights on Thursday,” McGuire said.
“Usually we do better under the lights,” Canfield said.
The Spartans play North Warren Regional on Cassels field on Thursday. Faceoff is 7 p.m.
