SPARTA, NJ - The girls lacrosse team from Sparta High School defeatedOld Tappan, 23-3, in the first round of the North Jersey Group 3 NJSIAA Tournament on Thursday. 

Beth McGraw and Taryn Penna were major contributors with seven and five goals respectively. Mackenzie Maguire, already a 100 goal-scorer, had four goals and six assists. Julia Silvestri scored three times with two assists. Alex Curran scored twice. Julia Corrice contributed a goal and three assists. Julianna McGuire provided an additional goal and an assist.

Goalie Bridget Den Boer had seven saves on the game, allowing only three to get by her all in the first half.  She was perfect for the second half of the game. 

Sparta (9-8) will travel to Phillipsburg on Saturday for the next round of play. The game is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
