Sparta High School Ski Team Has a Good Showing in the First Giant Slalom Race


VERNON, NJ- Sparta High School Ski team had their first Giant Slalom race at Mountain Creek on Thursday night. 

Coach Kyle Markovich expressed, "Our training prepared our team for our first GS race.  I was impresses at the intensity" of all the skiers.

Rachel Stote led the JV girls team with a first place finish in her race.  Her combined time was 1:58.04.

The girls varsity team placed 1st with a team time of 7:15.55, almost 10 seconds faster than the 2nd place team.   The girls took hold of the top ten finishes with Juliana Kaminski placing 5th, Margaret Zembrzuska placing 6th, Shannon Kaminski placing 7th, and Kimmy Conlan placing 8th.  

The boy JV team had the top 2 finishes in their race.  Chester Sears took first place in a field of 17 JV boys, in his very first ski race.   Ryan Bloomgren finished 2nd.  The coach was pleased with the JV boys team, including Chester, Justin Allan, Jack McGovern, Tyler Milway, and Doug Triolo putting down some great runs in their first ever race.  

The boys varsity team finished in the middle of the pack after racing against some strong competition.  Brad Maierle led the team, finishing 7th with a combined time of 1:37.95.  Freshman Rex Anderson had an outstanding performance in his debut as a Spartan racer with a 13th place overall and 2nd place finish on the Sparta High School team.  

Summing it up, Markovich said, "I expect our team to keep up the intensity they showed in our race and at practice last week.  Each team and individual have room to improve and it's only going to happen with hard work and lots of time on snow."

The next race for the Spartan Skiers is Thursday night at Mountain Creek.
