Sparta High School Softball Wins and Baseball Loses in Quarterfinal Round of Hunterdon-Sussex-Warren Tournament

SPARTA, NJ- Sparta High School softball team defeated Hunterdon Central on Saturday, May 3 at home by a score of 6-1.  Sparta played in Flemington,  winning the quarterfinal round in the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex tournament.  The six runs came from Gretchen Bowie, Courtney McKenna and Shannon Monahan each scoring two.  Bowie and Monahan each earned two RBIs.

Kim Puccio was on the mound for Sparta.  She allowed only three hits and one run with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Heather Schultz scored the only run for Hunterdon Central.  Karissa Zubalake was the losing pitcher allowing six hits, two walks and five strikeouts.

The Spartan softball team is now 11-6 on the season.  They will play at Pope John on Tuesday, May 6.

Sparta High School baseball lost in the quarterfinal round of the Hunterdon-Warren-Sussex tournament to Hunterdon Central 8-4 in Flemington.  Dillon Mendel and Thomas Ruddy batted .500. Ruddy earned two RBIs. Additional RBIs came from Matt Chemis and Austin Unglaub.  TJ Estanislau, Kevin Foulds, Anthony Longo and Ruddy  each scored.

Pitching for Sparta, Gordy Bonker went two innings, Matt Pampin got the loss with seven hits, four walks and three strikeouts. 

For Hunterdon Central Henry Hawkins and Matt Stalter each scored twice.  Sean Hanigan and Brett McManus each contributed 2 RBIs.  Pat Clare was on the mound for six and a third innings for the win.

Sparta's record is now 11-5.  The Spartans will play the Pope John Lions on Tuesday, May 6 at home.  The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.

SPARTA, NJ – A Wantage man is facing drug charges after a traffic stop for an expired registration sticker.  According to Sparta police Shane Dedminicantanio was pulled over on Route 15 after he passed Sparta Cpl.
