Sparta High School Swimming Splits with Kittatinny

SPARTA, NJ- Sparta High School Girls Swim Team relied upon their depth to sweep the relays enroute to a 91-79 victory over Kittatinny to improve to 1-1.  The Sparta Boys ran into a strong Cougar team falling 100-72 and dropping to 0-2.

On the Girls side, Sparta jumped out to an early lead with Emily Johnson, Elizabeth Smith, Katya Jouravlev and Lindsay Rippey winning the 200 Medley Relay in 2:04.06, followed by a 1-2 finish in the 200 Free by Freshman Emily Bettano in 2:16.10 and Johnson in 2:16.41.  Sparta maintained the lead with double winner Rachel Rippey taking both the 50 Free and 100 Free.  The lead was extended when Smith and Bettano went 1-2 in the 500 Free in 5:43.03 and 6:10.45, respectively.   Sparta closed out the meet with victories in the 200 Free Relay by Bettano, Melissa Knezevic, Ashley Smetana and Rachel Rippey, while Johnson, Lindsay and Rachel Rippey and Smith joined to take the 400 Free Relay in 4:11.94.

Sparta Boys had trouble against a very powerful Cougar team whose early lead was too tough to overcome.  Midway through the meet, Sparta made a run behind wins in the 100 Butterfly by Junior Tim Johnson, the 100 Free by Junior Cody Matheson and the 500 Free by Junior Cullen Walsh in 5:02.51.  Sparta's also took the 400 Free Relay with Chris Rudel, Walsh, Matheson and Johnson in 3:32.37.

Next up for Saprtan Swimming is Wallkill Valley on January 13 at 6 p.m. followed the next day,January 14, at 4 p.m. against United Newton Lenape Valley.  Both meets will be competed at the Kittatinny Natatorium.

Sparta Police: Newton Man Causes Accident, Faces DWI Charges
