Sparta High School Varsity Girls Swimmers have Strong Finish to Regular Season

SPARTA, NJ- Sparta High School Girls Swim Team closed out the regular season strong with a third place finish at the Sussex County Swim Championships.

The Spartans were led by seniors Rachel Rippey and Elizabeth Smith.  They were joined by freshman Emily Bettano and junior Lindsay Rippey, to score a come from behind victory over Vernon in the 400 Freestyle Relay in 3:57.70.

Rachel Rippey, Elizabeth Smith, Katya Jouravlev and Emily Johnson put in a good effort to place second to Pope John in the 200 Medley Relay.

Individually, Rachel Rippey continued what she has done all season long in the sprint Freestyles scoring second in the 50 and third in the 100.  Smith worked the distance Freestyles placing second in the 500 and fourth in the 200.  Lindsay Rippey took third in the 100 Breaststroke and fifth place in the 100 Butterfly.  Bettano was fifth in the 200 Freestyle.

Sparta also took a fourth place in the 200 Freestyle Relay with Bettano, Johnson, Jouravlev and Valerie Russo.

Pope John won the Girls meet and Vernon's Jinan Andrews set two Sussex County records.  Andrews went 1:54.45 to best the prior record set by Pope John's Kristen Ferriero of 1:59.03 and 52.49 in the 100 Freestyle to break the 54.69 mark of Vernon's Sarah Bond.

The Lady Spartans will now face number two seed Kinnelon in the state tournament.

SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta police are asking the community for help in locating a person of interest in several car burglaries.
