SPARTA, NJ- A Sparta man was charged with drug possession after he was stopped during the early morning hours of July 15 for having an inoperable headlight. At 4:45 a.m. Sergeant Jeffrey Mase was on routine patrol when he stopped a silver 2002 Honda Accord on the Blue Heron Interchange for the violation.
While speaking to the operator, 19 year-old Gerard S. Calderone, the sergeant detected a strong odor of burnt marijuana emanating from the vehicle. Mase requested and was granted from Calderone a voluntary Consent to Search the vehicle.
Subsequent investigation lead to the seizure of 50 grams or less of marijuana and numerous pieces of drug paraphernalia. There was a 16 year-old juvenile passenger in the vehicle but he was not charged in the incident. He was later turned over to adult family members at police headquarters.
Calderone was placed under arrest and later charged with Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance in a Motor Vehicle and Maintenance of Lamps. He was released several hours later on his own recognizance. Corporal Frank Schomp assisted with the investigation.
