SPARTA, NJ – Uplifting messages can come in many forms and be found in many places. At Sparta Middle School the student Peer Leaders have taken their messages of positivity to the bathrooms.
The students, with the guidance of Jenna Mathesius and Blair Scrudato are brightening the bathrooms with motivational messages.
"The bathroom is a popular place for boys and girls to express emotions and we wanted to create a positive place to provide encouragement for people struggling with their feelings." Peer Leaders Eleanor Luizzo, Remi Coleman, Devin, Dean, Uma Kowalski said.
“This project intends to help students feel a sense of belonging and inclusion at school each and every day,” Mathesius said. “Today’s middle school students face a unique set of challenges that can be discouraging at times.”
The Peer Leaders found inspiration in a similar program in Warren Middle School in Texas. The group of students meet twice a month after school with activities that hone their unique leadership qualities.
According to Mathesius, the students chose positive messages that “encourage fellow and future students of Sparta Middle School to recognize and embrace their individuality.”
“They home that these messages are a source of support for their peers who may need a helping hand,” Mathesius said.
