Sparta Middle School Teachers Attend MathCamp at Columbia University

SPARTA, NJ- Two Sparta Middle School Mathematics teachers spent a week at MathCamp.  Susan Sawey and Jane Stahlman spent July 14 through 18 at Columbia’s Teacher College.  They were given the opportunity to attend by the Middle School Math Supervisor Jennifer Chintala. 

The program is offered through Columbia University’s Continuing Professional Studies.  Sawey and Stahlman attended Integrating the Common Sore Shifts into Mathematics Instruction for Middle School Educators.  Information from Columbia University said “The goal of MathCamp is to help teachers apply the shifts specified by the Common Core Mathematics Standards into their classroom instruction.”

  • Strategies to deal with motivation and intervention.   

Sawey teaches seventh grade and Stahlman teaches sixth grade. 

“We had people in the class that came from New York, North Jersey, South Jersey,  Philadelphia and even as far away as Brazil. It was a great experience.  Both Jane and I have a lot to bring back to the Middle School math department,” said Sawey.
