SPARTA, NJ – The students at Mohawk Avenue School are learning the importance of giving back to their community. For their first school wide service project they participated in Notes in a Coat donation project partnering with Pass It Along as part of the Mohawk Avenue School Makes a Difference initiative.
The third grade families donated coats to be distributed at the Project Self Sufficiency Christmas Shop but that was only one facet of the project.
“Students also used their time and creativity to provide notes of kindness to be placed in the pocket of each coat,” School Psychologist Karen Wright said. “The response from the school and community has been amazing with a large delivery to Pass It Along before Thanksgiving.”
Many more coats have been collected in December as well.
"I am so proud of the students and the Sparta community for helping with Mohawk Makes a Difference this holiday season," Principal Laura Trent said.
The next community service project at the school will be a collection drive for local animal shelters.
