SPARTA, NJ – Family and friends surrounded Florence “Flossie” Meyer at the Township Council meeting on Tuesday as she received a proclamation honoring the active Spartan for her 100th birthday.

“I don’t feel any older than I did when I was 99,” Flossie said.

Flossie will reach the century mark on January 14.

Harry and Flossie married on December 12, 1940 and together they had three children; Bruce, Jane and Robert. Robert attended the meeting with Flossie.

According to the proclamation, Flossie moved to Sussex County after her husband Harry died in 1979.  Once here “she began a life of volunteering and giving back.”

She moved to Knoll Heights Village in 1994 where she continued to volunteer.  Flossie served as President of the Knoll Heights Residents’ Association, volunteered at church, drove her fellow seniors to doctors appointments, hospital and church.  She also served at the Newton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary’s Beehive.

All of Flossie’s good works led her to be named Sussex County’s Outstanding Senior a few years ago.

The proclamation congratulated Flossie and thanked her for her accomplishments and numerous contributions to the community.

Councilman Dave Smith said she was the “only one older than my mom who plays bridge.”

“Congratulations to Flossie Meyer,” Township Manager Bill Close said.  “It is a milestone in anyone’s life and one we all aspire to.  She is a lovely individual, as you can see, loved by many in the community. I am pleased to have Flossie in the community, adding value to it in many intangible ways. I wish you continued good health.”

She received the proclamation and gift from Township Mayor Molly Whilesmith and a bouquet of roses from her son, but, according to Close, Flossie did not want a birthday cake.  Several other parties have been planned in her honor.

“Thank you very much everyone,” Flossie said before departing.
