SPARTA, NJ- There was a good crowd for Bats Against Breast Cancer fundraiser and baseball game on Tuesday at Sparta High School. Sparta and Hopatcong High School took the field wearing pink uniforms; Sparta bright pink, Hopatcong pale pink. Many of the fans were also wearing pink. There were balloon, a bake sale and even Guidance Counselor turned DJ Tim Librizzi playing music. It was also Senior day to recognize the graduating baseball players.
With all of the festivities there was still a game to be played. Sparta again held Hopatcong scoreless, racking up 10 runs by the time the game was done. With a slow start of three runs in the first four innings, Sparta came on strong with three runs in the fifth and four runs in the sixth innings, the Spartans won 10-0.
Gordy Bonker pitched the first four innings with four strike outs and only two hits. Matt Pamping took the mound for three innings allowing just two hits and three strikeouts.
The bats were active. Austin Unglaub went 2-4 with a triple and an RBI. Anthony Longo and Thomas Ruddy both had doubles. Ruddy also had two runs and two stolen bases. Alec Bowie scored twice. Kevin Foulds scored and had an RBI. Dillon Mendel went 2-2 with two doubles, scoring twice and earning an RBI. Nick Makowitz went 3-4 with two RBIs and a run. Mike Meisel went 1-2 with an RBI.
Dawn Chemis, Senior Matt Chemis' mom said, "It was a gorgeous day and bittersweet since it was our last home game."
Early estimates put the total money raised through this week's efforts are close to two thousand dollars.
Sparta at 17-6, will go to Montville on Thursday, May 22.
