SPARTA, NJ – Sparta has once again made it to the top of a list of safest cities in America for 2021. According to Safewise, Sparta was named the eighth safest town in the country. The only other New Jersey town on the list was Bernards Township, coming in at number five.
Safewise noted “Sparta police helped to take down a serial burglar operating in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut since at least August 2020. In the midst of his multi-state burglary spree the suspect hit approximately 22 Sparta residents during October and November.“
"We are fortunate to have a police force that is proactive and focused on crime deterrence while being community minded," Sparta Police Chief Neil Spidaletto said. "Having a safe community happens when residents, dispatchers and officers- everyone in our community works together, being observant of suspicious or criminal activity."
According to the report, using FBI statistics, Sparta’s violent crime rate was 0.22 and personal crime rate was 1.67 per 1000 Sparta residents.
The crime rates were calculated based on FBI reports of violent or personal crimes per thousand people in each city. According to Safewise, “The ‘safest’ cities rankings are intended to highlight cities with low crime rates and ignite conversation and action around how to make all cities and communities safer.”
They also used “supplemental date points” including median income and poverty date, high school graduation rates, redlining practices, household access to high speed internet, city budget allocations and unemployment rates. According to their disclosure on methodology, they said they “chose these data points because over the past seven years they have observed a correlation between socioeconomic factors and reported crime rates.
Safewise said they only considered towns with populations more than 2500 for their survey, considering cities that had a population of 17,375 or above based on the median population in the United States. Of those cities they considered only the ones that filed crime reports with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The top 10 safest cities in America, according to Safewise are:
- Hopkinton, Massachusetts,
- Franklin Massachusetts,
- Buckingham Township, Pennsylvania,
- Oakland Township, Michigan,
- Bernards Township, New Jersey,
- Ridgefield, Connecticut,
- New Castle Town, New York,
