Sparta's Baseball and Softball Seasons End in Semifinal Round

SPARTA, NJ - The Sparta varsity baseball team lost to Mount Olive, 6-0, on Tuesday at home in the NJSIAA Section 1, Group 3 semifinals.

Dillon Mendel was on the mound for Sparta. Jake Snyder pitched for Mount Olive, allowing only two walks and one hit. Kevin Foulds got the only hit for Sparta in the fourth inning. 

Sparta ended the season with a record of 18-7 under coach Sam Slobodzian.

Sparta's softball team also ended its season on Tuesday, losing a sectional semifinal game to Indian Hills, 4-1, on the road. Sparta led, 1-0, until the fourth inning, when Indian Hills' bats came alive, scoring all four runs.  Gretchen Bowie scored the only run for Sparta, going 1-for-3. 

Kim Puccio pitched six innings for Sparta with four strikeouts and two walks. Devin Durando was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits and  striking out 11. 

The Sparta softball team finished its season with a record of 16 -11 under coach Rick Poots.
