NUTLEY, NJ – Ladies and gentleman, sharpen your axes!

One of the more unique businesses ever in the Township of Nutley, described as speakeasy axe throwing, opens this week, and it’s sure to provide a unique experience for residents.

Jersey Axe House is an independently owned small business operated by David Lembo and Mark DiBuono.  They are childhood friends who grew up in Hawthorne, NJ.

Our newsletter delivers the local news that you can trust.

“I remember as a kid going to hunting and fishing conventions with my dad and there was always an axe throwing booth,” Lembo told TAP.  “Something simple where you would just pay a few dollars and throw some tomahawks at a tree stump.  I always enjoyed visiting these booths and found myself waiting on the line multiple times during each convention.”

It was about two years ago when axe throwing started to pick up in popularity around the Country.  That’s when Lembo first joined an axe throwing league.

“I found myself throwing axes multiple times a week, and even set up a small target at my home.” Lembo explained.  “I have now traveled to many different places to throw axes and have plans to compete in my first out of country tournament this year.”

Located at 52 East Centre Street, Jersey Axe House is sure to bring clients from across North Jersey to Nutley, which can only benefit the township as those visitors may spend additional dollars in local shops and dining establishments.

“Mark and I have always wanted to open up our own business since we were kids – we both have great interest in axe throwing and saw a large opportunity to provide an amazing service to an area that was not being provided,” Lembo added.  “Our own location will allow us to drum up a larger interest in real axe throwing for the area and give us the platform to teach individuals how to throw axes for real.”

The duo will focus on growing the league and tournament presence in North Jersey and hope to grow the local population of competition ready axe throwers.

There were some stumbling blocks along the way as not all towns are interested in having an axe throwing business in their community.

After a long search in finding an appropriate building that would meet their needs, Lembo and DiBuono approached Nutley and were pleasantly surprised.

“(Nutley) was very interested in having us in the community and went above and beyond in helping us get what we needed,” said Lembo.  “The Zoning Department is full of amazing people and the building and fire inspectors were also a pleasure to deal with.

“We always planned on giving back to the community that we conduct our business in, and with the help and support we received from the start of our venture in Nutley, it will make it very easy for us to give greatly back to the town,” Lembo concluded.
