Special Events at SOMA Libraries Highlight the Week


SOUTH ORANGE/MAPLEWOOD, NJ – A quiet week in SOMA as school are closed for Spring Recess until Friday, but plenty of events at our local libraries.

Monday, April 21

7:30 p.m. – Friends of the Maplewood Library Annual Meeting with guest speaker, Allan Hoffman, Star Ledger technology columnist and author, who will talk about the ways technology is upending our long-held ideas about books, publishing and reading.

6:30 p.m. - Public Safety Committee Meeting at 76 South Orange Ave. 3rd Floor.

7:30 p.m. - Irvington Ave. Committee Branding/Marketing Meeting at 76 South Orange Ave. Suite 302, Conference Rm # 1.

Wednesday, April 23

3:30 p.m. – Storytime with Ruby at the South Orange Public Library. Read and feed a treat to library dog Ruby!

7 p.m. – SCORE Small Business Seminar at the Maplewood Memorial Library. Learn the steps to take to start a home-based business, whether as a full-time endeavor or as a part-time option for supplementing your income.  No registration needed.

Thursday, April 24

11 a.m. - Wilma and the Wingers perform live music at the South Orange Public Library.

1 p.m. – Discussion Group at the South Orange Public Library with Speaker: James Kimble, Prof. of Communications and Arts at SHU; Topic: Red Wisconsin: The Strange Day When America Lost the Cold War.

6 p.m. Hilton Bow Wow Book Buddies at the Maplewood Hilton Branch Library. Come to Hilton Branch and read to a dog… they LOVE stories! Sign up for a specific time or just drop in.

10:30 a.m. – Seton Stories at the South Orange Public Library: Stories and a craft, presented by Seton Hall students.

Saturday, April 26

10 a.m. – 5 p.m.  Friends of the Maplewood Library Book Sale at 51 Baker Street.

10:30 a.m. - Financial and Estate Planning Issues for the LGBT Community after DOMA: Financial advisor Daniel C. Singer and attorney Gary R. Botwinick will share their knowledge of the potential financial and legal problems that still exist, and discuss ways to deal with them.  Online registration is required. Register at
