LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Special Olympics New Jersey (SONJ) athletes will compete in the first state-wide event of 2019 and culminating event of the winter sports season, the annual Winter Games. Nearly 800 athletes from across New Jersey have qualified to compete.

The figure skating competition will take place Sunday, Jan. 20 at the Codey Arena in West Orange, New Jersey, while snow sports (alpine skiing, cross-country skiing,snowboarding and snowshoeing) will compete Feb. 5-6 at Mountain Creek in Vernon, New Jersey.

“The winter season offers a unique variety of team and individual sports opportunities for our athletes to train and compete in. From courts to rinks and out on the snow,Winter Games truly gives our athletes a lot to choose from and encompasses the entire state,” said Heather Andersen, president and CEO of SONJ. “These talented athletes have trained hard in their respective sports, earning the right to be here, and look forward to showcasing their skills.”

The 2019 SONJ Winter Games offers much more than competition. Many athletes will stay overnight for these events, giving them the opportunity to develop real-world independent living and social skills.

As part of this celebration of winter sports, local students from Atlantic County Special Services and Galloway Township Middle School, with and without intellectual disabilities, will have a chance to participate in sports training sessions, run by members of Stockton Athletic teams, at the SONJ Unified Game Day on Jan. 4.

The Floor Hockey tournament is supported by Atlantic City Electric, and the Opening Ceremony at Mountain Creek, held in the evening Feb. 5, is supported by Delta Dental of New Jersey.
