WESTFIELD, NJ—Music lovers can celebrate Valentine's Day in Westfield on Sunday, Feb. 17, at 4 p.m. with A Night at the Movies, Westfield Symphony Orchestra’s romantic trip down memory lane presenting Hollywood's greatest movie themes. The concert will cover the touchstones of great movie music, from Gone with the Wind to West Side Story to Star Wars and even Forest Gump.
The music of great movies plays an integral part in their fame, explained WSO Music Director and Conductor David Wroe.
“Music serves as an emotional intensifier of the visual stimuli, a window into the souls of the characters and a thermometer for the intensity and the overall mood of the drama. In short, is it a reflection of the visual, but in sound,” said Wroe. “It is a huge responsibility placed on the music, calling for masterpieces worthy of the cinematic genius demonstrated in the films we highlight. In each case the call was answered. Take away the music of all these films and they become empty and unmotivated.”
Wroe finds it difficult to name a single movie composer as his favorite. “Each composer I have highlighted has demonstrated, to the highest possible level, a masterful musical mirror of the film they have been assigned. They are all my favorites at the moment I watch the film or play their music,” he explained.
According to the WSO, this performance is made possible through the generous support of the NJ State Council on the Arts and the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.
The concert will take place at the Presbyterian Church in Westfield. For tickets ($25 to $75, students $12) or more information visit www.westfieldsymphony.org or call 908-232-9400.

Concert attendees will have the opportunity to buy a stunning faux pearl necklace for $30 from The Friends of the Westfield Symphony Orchestra that commemorates the 30-year “Pearl Anniversary” of the Symphony.
