SPF District Schools to be Closed Friday

SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ - District schools will be closed on Friday, Jan. 3 in anticipation of heavy snowfall Thursday night.

The announcement from the Board of Education was made early Thursday evening, shortly after Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency for New Jersey because of the storm.

A winter storm warning is in effect until 1 p.m. Friday with a forecast for 4 to 8 inches of snow in the Union County area and blowing snow. Later Friday, temperatures are forecast to drop to zero degrees, or possibly below, for the first time in several winters.

Friday will mark the first snow days the Scotch Plains-Fanwood district will have used this school year, after using up all of its allotted weather-related days off before winter even started last school year because of the damage and power outages from Hurricane Sandy.
