James Murphy scored the next goal for the Raiders on a free kick which was not counted at first, was finally scored after a long delay where the referees were trying to make the right call. Murphy’s goal gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
Elizabeth was the first team to strike in the second half when Kevin Flores, scored on a breakaway goal to cut the lead 2-1. Scotch Plains came back with Murphy’s second goal of the game from a cross by Dan Babis with 22 minutes left in the game. Elizabeth struck back when Flores scored his second goal of the game with a little over 3 minutes left in the game.
“One thing we need to improve on is holding on to our lead and not letting up late goals,” said Murphy. The score would remain the same for the rest of the game, the final score being 3-2 in favor of the Raiders. The win comes after losing a tough game to rival Westfield 1-0 in double overtime.
“After the loss to Westfield, we had to keep our morale high so that we could be ready for the next game,” said Zazzali. “This shows Elizabeth that we’re not a push over just because we lost to Westfield and it shows that we will battle with everyone.”
With the win, the Scotch Plains-Fanwood improves their record to 4-1 and hand Elizabeth their first loss of the season dropping them to 4-1. The next game for Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School will be at Hillsborough on September 21st.
