WESTFIELD, NJ - The Scotch Plains-Fanwood 10U Blue Raiders baseball team needed eight innings and three hours to defeat Westfield-Black, 18-17, in the semifinal round of its bracket in the New Providence Green League Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
After Westfield rallied for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game, each team scored a run in the seventh inning and SPF scored a run in the top of the eighth to take an 18-17 lead. Aidan Mooney, the Raiders' fourth pitcher, then came on to pitch a scoreless bottom of the eighth to record the save, with first baseman Ryan Brandl getting the final putout by beating the batter to first base by half a step on a grounder to first with the potential tying run on third base.
Matthew Bender had four RBI and made a spectacular catch in deep center field in extra innings for the Raiders, who got three hits and three RBI from Gabriel Barco and a pair of RBI singles from Andy Kipp.
The two teams had reached the semifinals with tight victories in the quarterfinal round: Scotch Plains-Fanwood defeated Hanover, 11-10, and Westfield-Black edged Montville, 2-1.
Tommy Schmidt, Brendan Fay, Jackson Lubalin, Aidan Mooney and James Barth were among the hitting stars for Scotch Plains-Fanwood, which will host the 10U bracket championship game Monday night against Kenilworth at Booth Field.
