SPFBL 12U Raiders lose to Basking Ridge-Black in League Championship, 9-8

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - The 12U SPF Raiders baseball team lost the New Providence Green League championship game in a nail-biting 9-8 decision to Basking Ridge Black Wednesday night at Memorial Park.   

Basking Ridge scored one run in the top of the first on a walk and two singles. The Raiders came up in the bottom of the first and scored four runs in the inning on a singles by Joe Barge, Matt Delgado and Nolan O’Connor. Mike Besante connected for a two-run homer over the left-field fence for the second game in a row.

In the third inning, Basking Ridge scored two more runs on a walk, two singles and a fielder’s choice. The Raiders responded in the bottom of the third with Barge working a one-out walk then stole second base. Colin Fitzgerald laid down a great bunt beating out the throw at first as Barge rounded third and scored on the play to take a 5-3 lead.

In the fourth frame, Basking Ridge scored three runs to take a 6-5 lead. The Raiders went down in order in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings. 

Basking Ridge came to bat in the top of the sixth and scored three more runs to take a 9-5 lead. The Raiders rallied in the bottom of the sixth with Barge and Fitzgerald working walks to start the inning and Barge scoring on a single by Delgado. With runners on second and third, Besante delivered a single up the middle scoring Fitzgerald and Delgado. The Raiders were retired after scoring three runs and coming up one run short of tying the game.

The 12U Raiders had a very successful summer season by going 11-4, capturing the division title and being the runner-up in the New Providence Green League.
