Senior Alex Gary scored the game-winner and his first goal of the season at the 27th minute of the second half off an assist from Nathan Hafizi. Hafizi took a thru pass from senior Aidan Forys, who controlled it long enough to attract defenders to him before the successful cross.

“It was a good win for us, the kids needed it. They have improved as a team since our earlier performances,” said Dayton head coach Felix Fabiano. “They just need time. We have four starters playing from last year's team and everyone else has limited or no varsity experience.”

Junior Dillon Nelson scored his first goal of the season off an assist from senior Jeremy Dash in the first half to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 halftime lead.

Junior goaltender Andrew Sprague registered six saves in the win.

“The kids have been just great, they always give 100 percent and approach practices and games with lots of enthusiasm.  I have to say that they loving every minute on the field,” said Fabiano. “Last Friday it was raining very heavy and was cold. I called an optional practice and the attendance was close to 100 percent. The players have adjusted and adapted to all of the safety protocols established by the school and take every precaution possible to deal with our present situation.”

Senior Dan Derius-Rodriguez tied the game at 1-1 in the second half for Rahway (2-4-1), prior to Gary’s heroics. Junior Adriano Perez made two stops in the loss.

“I have been fortunate to have great coaches who know the game but, above all, care about the kids,” added Fabiano. “Having made the necessary adjustments, at times, it almost appears like a normal season.”

The Bulldogs return to Mountain Ave for their next two games, starting Thursday vs. Johnson (3-3) at 4 p.m. and Rahway on Tuesday, Oct. 27, also at 4 p.m.

The Union County Tournament will be seeded as well on Oct. 27.
