SUMMIT, N.J. – The Dayton girls basketball team had a short and crazy stay in the Union County Tournament.

Senior Eleanor Alix scored a game-high 22 points, hitting four 3-pointers, and senior Maggie Russell added 17 points with 16 rebounds to lead fifth-seeded Kent Place to a 65-47 victory over 12th-seeded Dayton Wednesday in the first round of the Union County Tournament in Summit.

Freshman Lauren Rusas tallied 11 points for Kent Place (15-5), which has won 10 straight games and advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals where it will face rival and in-town neighbor fourth-seeded Oak Knoll.

Trailing 14-9 after the first quarter, Kent Place outscored Dayton, 21-7, in the second to take a 30-21 halftime lead.  Dayton stormed back in the third to tie the game at 40-40, but Kent Place responded with a 23-10 fourth quarter to move on.

Senior forward Caitlynn McTernan scored a team-high 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers, and senior guard Sayre Brandstatter added 12 points with two 3-pointers to pace Dayton (10-11), which lost for just the second time in its last six games.



Junior forward Michelle Bellino also chipped in with 12 points in the loss as the Bulldogs fell to 4-6 on the road.

The Bulldogs will visit Dunellen on Tuesday, Feb. 19 with a 5:30 p.m. tip and then return home for its final regular season game versus Governor Livingston on Friday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.

Bulldog Bites: Brandstatter has scored in double figures in eight of her last nine games ... Bellino leads the team in points (249, 10 better than Brandtstatter) and rebounds (129).
