SPRINGFIELD, NJ — The Dayton girls’ tennis team ended its surreal shortened regular season, winning two of its last three matches, finishing with an overall record of 5-3 in the Union County Conference’s Valley Division.
The Bulldogs, who will begin play in the Union County Tournament Wednesday and Thursday, are led by co-captains senior Brielle Ramundo (1st singles, 2-6) and junior Julia Goldman (2nd singles, 7-1).
Ramundo posted her best win on Senior Night against Roselle junior Bernice Torres.
The two had previously played on October 1st and Ramundo lost in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. 13 days later Ramundo atoned for her loss and defeated Torres in dramatic fashion, 1-6, 6-6 (8-6), 10-7 in a third set tie-break after dropping the first set 1-6
Goldman’s best win came against Johnson junior Grace Cassidy on Oct. 15. The two had previously played and Goldman lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0 on Oct. 6 in their first meeting. Goldman responded with a 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 three-set victory over Cassidy after losing the first set and narrowly winning the second set in a tie-break.
Senior Carolina Silva (3rd singles, 6-1), 1st doubles senior Alexis Dolack/junior Ilona Lyakhovsky (3-1) and 2nd doubles senior Melissa Evers/sophomore Jordyn Chait (3-1) all have contributed to the Bulldogs’ successful season and look to continue that positivity into the county and state tournaments.
Seniors Juliana Monticello and Kanzy Zayan, sophomores Talia Farber and Cecilia Perez, along with freshman Meghan Kreinberg all have made contributions.
“Despite all of the challenges of living through a pandemic, the girls have been very responsible and made the most of a shortened season,” said Dayton head coach Jillian Maged, who just completed her second season at the helm, but has been with the team since 2017.
UCT setup for Wednesday: Positions are individually bracketed and will play throughout the day as the 16 courts in Plainfield’s Tennis Complex become available.
Of the 18 teams in the county, Dayton’s seedings are: 1st singles: Brielle (16) will play Roselle Park (15) first to play into the bracket; 2nd singles: Julia (10) will play Cranford (7); 3rd singles: Carolina (11) will play Summit (6); 1st doubles: Alexis/Ilona (13) will play Kent Place (4) and
2nd doubles: Melissa/Jordyn (13) will play Oak Knoll (4).
