SPRINGFIELD, NJ - At Tuesday's township committee meeting, an update to the promotional procedure for fire captains passed on first reading.
The update to the ordinance specifically amends several key sections related to the promotion of a firefighter to fire captain, including the notification of the intent to promote, eligibility requirements for the promotion and the process of determining how to promote firefighters.
In particular, the township will allow a minimum of no less than eight weeks notice from the date of the announcement until the written exam is given. Any notification of the opportunity for promotion will be posted in the firehouse and issued to any eligible candidates by email, with eligible candidates confirming their willingness to participate within 10 days of the original posting.
Firefighters looking to be promoted to the rank of Fire Captain must have at least five completed years of service within the Springfield Fire Department by the date of announcement for the promotional process. Promotional criteria for candidates looking to move up to fire captain will include an examination of eligibility, written and oral exams, education, seniority in the department and an evaluation of the candidate's personnel file.
In the examination phase, candidates will have a two-part exam, with a written and an oral section. Each section of the exam will be worth 100 points. In the written portion, an exam date will be scheduled for all participants, with individual oral exams following. Each Oral exam will be conducted by a panel of no less than three public safety experts.
After being voted on and approved in the first reading, the ordinance will be up for final approval at the next township committee meeting.
Additionally, one firefighter was promoted by resolution at the township committee meeting. Ninth Class Firefighter Andrew Sonnet had successfully completed one full year at his current rank. As a result, Springfield Fire Chief Carlo Palumbo recommended to the township committee that Sonnet be promoted to the rank of Eighth Class Firefighter, which the committee agreed to.
The next township committee meeting is Tuesday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m
