Squadron Learns About Glider Planes

July 24, 2014 at 1:00 PM

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ - The Raritan Valley Composite Squadron, a local unit of the Civil Air Patrol, spent Father’s Day in June at Solberg Airport to experience the thrill and excitement of silent flight.

During the day, each cadet had the chance to fly in a pilot-assisted glider plane. Cadets were then towed by a powered plane before being released into the quiet skies over the Round Valley area.

According to a release, glider flights are part of the CAP cadet orientation flight program, and cadets learn the thrill of flying. Each cadet who is under the age of 18 is eligible for five flights in a powered aircraft, five flights in a glider aircraft and an unlimited number of backseat flights.

The squadron meets on Wednesdays from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Central Jersey Regional Airport on Millstone River Road in Hillsborough.
