SPARTA, NJ- Young builders took over St Mary’s Episcopal church for a week of fun. This summer, their vacation bible school program followed the theme of Workshop of Wonders, Building with God.
There were 29 children ages four through 10 who participated in the daily activities. Additionally there were nine older children serving as junior counselor and many other adult volunteers.
Each morning all would gather for the bible story of the day. Emily Ference created puppets and a stage where, together with her husband Herman, they told stories such as the Rebuilding of the Temple and the Feeding of the 5000.
Following the story, the children would break up into groups according to age and head off to different rotations. Each child was able to experience crafts, music, recreation and science each day. They had snack that was cleverly tied to the lesson of the day as well.
The participant each got a t-shirt and a copy of the music they learned throughout the week. On Friday they were treated to fun on a slip and slide and water balloons.
"It was a week filled with both things sacred and joy-filled,"said Reverend Carol Gadsen.
