WEST ORANGE, NJ - The spring months bring warmer weather and increased opportunity for outdoor activities. To help stay healthy and injury-free this season, Doctors Express of West Orange offers the following information and tips.
Allergies: As flowers start to blossom, those suffering from seasonal allergies begin their annual ritual of allergy symptoms. Over 35 million Americans suffer from seasonal springtime allergies. Springtime allergies are typically caused by pollen. When pollen particles enter the system of an allergic person, the immune system treats the pollen as it would bacteria, viruses, or other foreign organisms. This triggers an immune response that can cause symptoms such as runny nose, itchy eyes, and sneezing.
When pollen counts are high, sufferers are more likely to experience symptoms. If you find yourself suffering from allergy symptoms in the springtime, you most likely have seasonal allergies. Make sure to see a doctor. Your doctor may refer you to an allergist who can treat the symptoms with a variety of medications. These medicines can be antihistamines, decongestants, eye drops, and/or steroid nasal sprays. Some medications include a combination of antihistamine and a decongestant.
Sports Injuries: With the warmer weather, we may feel energized to participate in the outdoor sports we love. Before rushing out there, be sure to protect yourself by following the tips offered by Doctors Express Urgent Care:
- Get a physical.
- Stretch. A 10-minute jog and light stretching will prevent tearing of the muscles.
- Hydrate. Drink at least 64 ounces of water a day.
- Diet. Always eat breakfast and don’t eat a heavy meal less than 3 hours before participating in a sport.
Strep throat is a common and contagious infection caused by Group A streptococcus bacteria. Although it can affect anyone; it is especially common among children. Strep throat is usually treated with an antibiotic. If one is prescribed to you, make sure to always finish the medication. To alleviate symptoms in the meantime, a pain reliever or Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAID) can reduce swelling and relieve pain.
