NEW JERSEY -- Neil Malvone, Assistant Professor of Sport Management, Caldwell University, recently appeared on One-on-One with Steve Adubato, where he spoke about the booming e-sport gaming industry and the university’s new program to prepare students for careers in that growing field.

“The studies are telling us that e-sports will be a billion dollar industry by the end of this year,” said Malvone. Caldwell University’s program focuses on the business side of the industry. The opportunities are similar to those in sport management, Malvone said.

E-sport is a form of sport competition using video games as a medium. Most e-sport competitions are organized multiplayer video game competitions with individuals or as teams.

Our newsletter delivers the local news that you can trust.

For example, Malvone spoke about a recent Fortnite tournament in Queens. Fortnite is an extremely popular and competitive multiplayer online video game. For these types of e-sporting events, staff is needed just like other types of sporting events, from communications and marketing, to event planning and production, as well as technology and operations.

“The announcers in e-sport events are not called announcers or broadcasters, they’re called shoutcasters,” said Malvone, “and there’s a training that has to go into that like anything else.”
