NEW JERSEY -- Remodeling experts and HGTV stars, Anthony Carrino and John Colaneri, were guests on One-on-One with Steve Adubato, sharing their latest projects as well as guidance for homeowners with the itch to renovate.
“The biggest thing you can do is plan,” advised John Colaneri. “Contractors in general have not been great at communication, and the crux of the entire renovation is communication,” said his Co-star, Anthony Carrino. Both grew up in Bergen County, New Jersey in nearby towns, and are indeed cousins.
In addition to their HGTV show, Cousins Undercover, the two have a new children’s book, What Can You Do with a Toolbox?, a podcast, Home with the Cousins, and a new series called The Build Up on Ellen DeGeneres’ online channel, EllenTube.com.
The idea for a children’s book to impart their knowledge to children came from visits the two paid to Colaneri’s wife’s pre-K class, where the young students were fascinated by tools. “Through making it fun at a really early age,” said Carrino, “getting that interest level up is a great way to start.”
The first season of the web series, The Build Up, focuses on Baltimore, Maryland, with the goal of renovating key buildings in the community. “We’re giving back to neighborhoods in need, but we’re encouraging those people within those neighborhoods to help us help their own community,” said Carrino. “Hopefully, you’re building an army of people that pay it forward down the line.”
Their podcast is aimed at an adult audience, and walks listeners through all the steps in a major home renovation, offering crucial advice along the way. “We are professionals that have been doing this for 15 plus years,” said Colaneri. “We’ve made mistakes, we’ve learned from mistakes, we are telling you what not to do--that’s why we have the podcast,” he said.
