Stop & Shop Hosting Food Bank Donations

RARITAN, NJ - The Food Bank Network of Somerset County is encouraging donations with a collection at Stop & Shop on Orlando Drive in Raritan Aug. 17.

According to a release from the Food Bank Network, donations are down this time of year. The bank distributes as much as 25,000 pounds of food each month to hundreds of local families.

The collection will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and people are invited to donate food and non-food items. A list of items being collected can be found at http://somersetfoodbank.org/donate.

In addition, the bank is collecting school supplies for children returning to school, including backpacks, notebooks, three-ring binders, paper, highlighters, markers, pens, pencils and crayons.

Somerset Patriots mascot Sparkee will also be on hand from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. to sign autographs and meet with visitors.

The Food Bank Network of Somerset County is based in Bridgewater, with a motto of “Hunger Doesn’t Get a Vacation.”

“Donations tend to increase during the holiday season and school year, but then drop during the summer months,” executive director Marie Scannell said in a release. “So it is more important than ever to donate at this time of the year.”
