ROXBURY, NJ – Roxbury Mayor Bob DeFillippo wants to make this clear to the rumor mongers in town: Walmart has not given up on its plan to stay in Roxbury, so stop spewing your baloney.
When he found out recently that somebody was saying the company was no longer interested in building a new store in Ledgewood, DeFillippo became incensed. The mayor said the claim - which he described as completely erroneous - was voiced at a Roxbury senior citizens’ club meeting while he was in Florida several weeks ago.
“Not much happened while I was on vacation,” DeFillippo said at last week’s Roxbury Township Council meeting. “But I did hear a rumor had been circulating that Walmart was not going to build in Roxbury. It’s patently false.”
DeFillippo is not only mayor, but also on the township economic development committee and planning board. Through all those functions, DeFillippo has been dealing with the Walmart project for many months. If Walmart changed its mind about replacing its recently closed store in Ledgewood with a new “supercenter,” DeFillippo would know.
“The rumor itself is irresponsible,” he said. “We have representatives from Walmart that we’ve been working with and we contacted them. Walmart assured me that plans have not changed and they are excited about coming to Roxbury and we’re excited to get them. So, to those people who thought otherwise, that’s incorrect.”
DeFillippo’s assertion was backed up by Walmart Corporate Communications Director Phillip Keene. “Nothing new to report on Ledgewood,” he told TAPinto Roxbury. “We are moving forward as planned and previously announced.”
The company shut-down its old Ledgewood store in May and has been disassembling it internally in preparation for a full demolition. The store will be replaced by a new Walmart Supercenter that will be an anchor store for the new Shops at Ledgewood Commons mall which is replacing the former Ledgewood Mall.
