Students in fifth and sixth grade at Congregation Beth Israel’s Religious School in Scotch Plains prepared hummus on Wednesday, March 19, as part of a lesson about Israel.
The students learned Hebrew vocabulary and interesting facts about hummus while making the Middle Eastern dish with Matan Sidi, an Israeli emissary (called a Rishon in Hebrew). Through a program sponsored by Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest, Matan works weekly at Congregation Beth Israel to educate students about his country.
“Matan teaches the students about Israeli culture in creative and fun ways,” said Elly Bauman, Education Director of Congregation Beth Israel. “The students learned a lot about Israel by making hummus from scratch, and then they had even more fun eating their creation!”
