Q: While the warm weather is enjoyed by many it is crucial to stay protected and hydrated. Maria wrote in to get more information about HeatStroke symptoms and ways to treat someone who may be suffering from one.   

A:  Maria a heatstroke takes place when the body fails to regulate its own temperature and body temperature continues to rise, often to 104 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. A heatstroke can be life threatening and can result in complications long term. Signs of someone who may be suffering from a heatstroke are:

Convulsions, unconsciousness, moderate to severe difficulty breathing, Confusion severe restlessness, fast heart rate, heavy sweating/sweating may have stopped, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you notice any of these symptoms call 9-1-1 immediately.

After you’ve called 9-1-1 things that may help are moving the person into a cool place, out of direct sunlight, spraying cool not Cold water on the person to cool the body. Remove any clothing that isn’t necessary, applying an ice pack to the neck, armpit, or groin for faster cooling. Do not give any medications to someone who may be suffering from a heatstroke because the body may response differently under the circumstances.  

Maria, always remember the best way to stay healthy on especially hot days is to drink lots of fluids specifically water. Staying hydrated is very key!!
