LIVINGSTON, NJ - School is almost over and it’s time to get ready for summer. Below are some ways to beat the heat and keep busy.
FREE Swim Lessons at the YMCA: The West Essex YMCA is offering a week of FREE swim lessons to teach children water safety and basic swimming skills. Classes will run June 23-26. Summer Programs: Livingston Youth and Senior Services is offering a host of programs this summer for residents including summer camps for all ages, which are pepped throughout the above liked guide. Other summer camp programs are also listed HERE.

Host a Summer Exchange Student: 15 students from Spain will be arriving in Livingston to participate in a home-stay program. The local coordinator for the group is looking for volunteer families to host these international students from June 27-July 25. Learn what Cub Scouting is all about: On Saturday, June 14, Cub Scout Pack 59 will be hosting a barbecue for families in Livingston with boys in elementary school. Donate Books: The Friends of the Livingston Library is seeking donations of books for children, young readers, and young adults (teens). This is an opportunity to give books a new life and help Friends raise money for the library. Books should be in good, saleable condition. Donations may be brought to the Friends Desk anytime the Library is open. A tax-receipt is available from the Help Desk. Friends is also accepting donations of books for adults (fiction and non-fiction) as well as books on CD, CDs, and DVDs. No magazines or text books, please.
Board of Education Meeting: The Livingston Board of Education will meet at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 16, at Livingston High School. See the agenda by clicking HERE. Business will include the appointment of an interim Superintendent of Schools, ratification of union contracts, and the school calendar for 2015-2016.
Nominating Petition to Serve on the School Board is Due by 7/28: Prospective candidates must file a nominating petition by July 28 with the Office of the Essex County Clerk. Email Joann Goldberg, firstname.lastname@example.org, administrative assistant to the LPS business administrator, to receive a copy of the official county petition form. The election is Tuesday, November 4.
Donate to LTV: The Livingston High School TV Studio celebrated 30 years of teaching and producing high school television on June 7, with a live fundraising telethon that raised more than $11,000 and was seen by 3,000-plus viewers. Applications for Subscription Busing are Due June 30: Subscription busing is available, on a lottery basis, for LPS students who are not eligible for free busing. Applications are due June 30. Click HERE for the application.
Safety Town Summer Kindergarten Readiness Program: This is a summer program for preschoolers to help them get ready for kindergarten. A small town is set up with streets, crosswalks, streetlights, stop signs and buildings. Children are taught how to cross the streets, be safe on school buses, and walk to school. The two-week session, for children ages 5 and 6, will be held from at 10 a.m. to noon on Monday, August 4 to Friday, August 15. Cost is $50 per child.
