Summer is still here! With all of the heat and activities comes a growing thirst that must be quenched. There is no better way to satisfy that thirst than by incorporating readily available fresh fruit in a delicious fruit smoothie. Whether it’s a classic strawberry-banana smoothie or a brand new creation of your own, the creamy texture and sweetness of a smoothie is sure to satisfy you.
Here are some simple tricks for making a great smoothie. There are many variations in the world of smoothies. Thickness, sweetness and texture are all variables which can be adjusted depending on your personal preference. I love a thick, sweet and smooth drink, while others may prefer just the opposite. The great thing about smoothies is that they are completely adaptable to your taste.
The following is my ideal recipe for a mixed berry smoothie. Start with a chilled blender or immersion blender if you own one. The chilled blender keeps the contents cold and prevents you from needing to add too much extra ice which can dull the flavor. Just place the blender in the freezer for about 15 minutes prior to adding your ingredients. Add about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of low-fat blueberry or other fruit yogurt to your blender (Greek or regular, whichever you prefer). Next, add about 1/3 cup of frozen raspberries. Yes, I said frozen. Frozen fruits are especially sweet, and you don’t need to worry about ripeness. In addition, using frozen fruit allows you to limit the amount of ice in your smoothie. If frozen raspberries are unavailable, fresh will also work along with about four to six ice cubes. Next, pour approximately ¼ cup of orange juice into the blender and blend until all of the ingredients have been fully incorporated.
Taste your smoothie and decide what it needs. Is it too sweet or not sweet enough? Is it too thick or thin? Does it need to be colder? Adjust your drink to fit your preferences. When the desired taste and consistency has been achieved, there is one final decision: to strain or not to strain. You can leave the raspberry seeds in the smoothie or, if you dislike that texture, strain the mixture through a medium sieve or strainer.
I love to serve my smoothies in a margarita glass topped with fresh mint or some other decorative glass. Now that your smoothie, tailored to your taste—is done, enjoy it poolside with family or friends. Using this basic technique, feel free to experiment with different fruits and ingredients, and enjoy your signature smoothie all summer long!
