Summit Boys LAX Dumps Mahwah 13-2, Moves to Third Round of State Tournament
The Hilltoppers took care of business in the first half, outscoring the Thunderbirds 9-1, owning the ball for large chunks of the contest, and scoring the final six goals of the opening 24 minutes.
Senior attack James Strabley had a big game, notching a Hat Trick and adding three assists, Andrew Chase also had three goals, Brian Hadley won 9 out 10 at "the X" in the opening half alone, and the Summit defense was virtually air tight when called upon.
Strabley, John Cordrey, and Chris Zanelli scored in the first five minutes of the game to give Summit a 3-0 advantage, before Mahwah got one back. Strabley scored off a nice feed from Matt Fischetti to make it 4-1 after one quarter.
Strabley assisted on three of the five Hilltopper goals in the second quarter, with Connor Murphy, Jake Paytas, and Max Graeb the beneficiaries of his passes. Andrew Chase and Strabley also scored, in a quarter that was notable mainly for two Summit goals in the final 12.2 seconds of the half.
After Paytas scored, Hadley won the face-off, the ball was pushed into the offensive end, and a rushed shot went high and wide with two seconds to go in the quarter. Strabley picked up the ball and, on the restart, flung it to an on-rushing Graeb in the crease who stuffed it home.
The lone bright spot for Mahwah was the play of goalie Brendan Granquist who, despite being beaten nine times in the half, made several impressive saves.
The second half was reminiscent of Summit;'s last match versus Jefferson, with Head Coach Jim Davidson resting his starters and substituting liberally. Jay Winchell came on in relief of Sam Bebout in the Summit goal, and made three nice saves in the final quarter.
The final Hilltopper goals were scored by Murphy, Fischetti, and a pair from Andrew Chase.
Summit next faces Lakeland, the fifth seed, May 22 at Investors Bank Field, with face-off at 4 p.m. The Lancers beat fourth-seeded Ramapo 7-4.
