SUMMIT, NJ - Looking every bit the number-one seed, the Summit High School Girls Varsity Lacrosse team opened state tournament play by thrashing River Dell 17-3.
Nine different players scored Summit's first nine goals, all of which came in a first half that decided the game, and ended with the Hilltoppers up 9-0.
Maggie Moriarty, Sara Szynal, Meaghan Celmer, Emily Kalin, Catherine Cordrey, Isabel Zachara, Callie Humphrey, Julia Persche, and Kathleen Morano all were on target, and Moriarty and Cordrey each had two assists. Summit was scoring, winning the draw, and scoring again.
Celmer and Szynal scored again in the opening four minutes of the second half, before River Dell got on the scoreboard to make it 11-1. Cordrey notched her second, River Dell answered, and then the Hilltoppers went on another three-goal run -- fueled by a brace of goals from Zachara, and Persche's second -- to make it 15-2 with just over eight minutes remaining. The two second-half goals gave Zachara a Hat Trick on the afternoon.
After River Dell's third goal, Morano's second, assisted by Mary Fischetti, and Kalin's second closed out the scoring.
Summit will continue tournament play May 19, when they take on Delaware Valley at the Upper Turf Field. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
