SUMMIT, NJ - Demonstrating both their defensive superiority and offensive balance, the Summit High School Girls Varsity Lacrosse Team won the sectional title, and advanced to the Group 2 Final, by beating Rumson 14-6 at the Upper Turf Field.
Offensively, Summit was led by Meaghan Celmer, Madeleine Gramigna, and Sara Szynal, who each notched three-goal Hat Tricks. Defender Anna Baumeister and goalie Kady Glynn anchored a defensive unit that was strong all afternoon, holding Rumson to three goals in each half.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first, Bridget Curran scoring the first of her four goals on the day. Summit responded with three straight goals, with Celmer, Julia Persche, and Szynal giving the Hilltoppers a 3-1 lead.
With just under 12 minutes to play in the half, Curran struck again to cut the lead to one, but Summit went on a four-goal run to open up a five-goal lead. A pair of goals from Gramigna, followed by scores from Szynal and Celmer gave the Hilltoppers some breathing room.
Curran completed her Hat Trick for Rumson with just under two minutes to go in the half only to see Celmer complete her Hat Trick 41 seconds later. At the break, Summit led 8-3.
Glynn, playing with a stick borrowed from her father due to her stick breaking pre-game, notched her 400th career save in the first half.
As she did to open the game, Curran -- who has committed to the University of North Carolina -- opened the second half with a goal to cut the lead to four, but Stephanie Ford answered for Summit four minutes later. After Mary Scarrone tallied for the Bulldogs, Catherine Cordrey and Szynal upped Summits lead to 11-5 with just over ten minutes remaining.
Rumson's Anna Finn was on target at the nine-minute mark, however it was the last of the Bulldog's goals on the day and Summit still had something left in their offensive tank.
Callie Humphrey, Gramigna, and Cordrey --- the last coming with just over a minute to go -- provided the final margin of victory.
Summit will take on Red Bank Catholic for the Group 2 title June 1 at Monmouth University. Game time is yet to be announced.
