SUMMIT, NJ - The Summit High School Girls Basketball program will host its 7th Annual "Hoops for Hope" tournament on February 22. The multi-game event, which has raised $20,000 since its inception, begins at 2 p.m. with the Freshman game, followed by the JV at 3:30, and the Varsity playing at 5 p.m. All games are versus James Caldwell High School, and will be played at the Summit High School Gym.
Summit H.S. Girls Basketball Hosts Event to Benefit Local Breast Cancer Charities Feb. 22
"Hoops for Hope" 2014 will raise funds for both the Adrienne Reid Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Connie Dwyer Breast Center. The Adrienne Reid Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a Senior class female athlete each year. Reid passed away in 2008 after a long battle with breast cancer. Her daughter, Alex, played for the Hilltoppers, Class of 2009.
The Connie Dwyer Breast Center at Saint Michael's Medical Center in Newark provides breast care for women in the greater Newark area. The Center reaches out to more than 1,500 women annually through free educational sessions and breast cancer screenings, The Center's mission is to provide advanced care - from screening to diagnosis to treatment and follow-up - for all women, regardless of their ability to pay. There is a special focus on addressing the statistical disparity in the disease's impact among African-American and Hispanic women.
Fans in attendance can bid on baskets filled with donated items such as tickets to sporting events, autographed team items, and a Baltusrol golf packages. Pink "Hoops for Hope" T-shirts will be sold, as will bake sale treats. Donations are still being accepted from local businesses and residents, including gift certificates from local restaurants and retail shops. The Lady Hilltoppers will be rocking special pink jerseys for the occasion, and fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game. Admission is free, however donations are appreciated.
