Summit Ice Hockey Regains Union County Championship with 3-0 Victory over Westfield

UNION COUNTY, N.J. – The Summit ice hockey team is back on top of Union County.

After relinquishing the county championship to Westfield last year, the Hilltoppers returned the favor, defeating the Blue Devils 3-0 in the UCIHL title game on Saturday at Warinanco Skating Center.

“Its great to avenge the lost from last year,” Summit junior Chris Zanelli said. “Its always better to beat them after a loss. It just feels that much better that we left no stone unturned this season.”

After playing two scoreless periods, Summit scored three in the third period to win their fourth county title in the league’s six-year history.

Zanelli, along with senior Liam McLaughlin and Corey McManus lit the lamp in the final 15 minutes to finish the season-sweep of Westfield.

Summit goaltender Garrett McGowan had 15 saves en route to the third county championship of his career. Westfield’s netminder Dan DoCampo also made 15 stops in the losing effort.

Both teams are back in action next week for the start of the state tournament. Summit hosts Lakeland on Tuesday at Warinanco Skating Center in the opening round of the Public B bracket. Westfield will face the winner of Whippany Park and Hunterdon Central in the second round of the Public A bracket.
