On Saturday May 4, The Summit YMCA’s Togetherhood™ group launched their fourth community service project at the Summit Senior Housing complex. Togetherhood™ provided the seniors with Cinco de Mayo party that included lunch, a craft making project, a spay day, prizes, piñata and dance production by 40 students from the Summit School of Dance, under the direction of owner, Teri Phinney.
Teri said, “When the girls heard about this, they wanted to do it without hesitation!”
There were 4 groups of girls that performed 6 different dances for Senior residents, guests and volunteers. Many of the dancers had so much fun they stayed to enjoy the rest of the day spending time with our Senior friends.
The Togetherhood™ committee meets once a month to research community needs and then, based on the apparent gaps, focused their efforts on serving the unmet needs of the senior population. The seniors enjoy the first event so much that they asked if we could come back again every year. Other Togetherhood™ events are Senior Spa Day, Family Dinner Project, Family Fun Nights, Working together with SHIP, St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Shelter and Holiday Cookie Walk to benefit the program.
The Togetherhood™ program is a great way for Y members to become more socially responsible by participating in the Y’s cause to strengthen our community. It’s a great way for families and people of all ages to help strengthen the community through personal rewarding projects. We have volunteer that ranged from 5 to 65 years old!
