Surviving Cancer: Our Voices and Choices

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - Saturday is National Make a Difference Day, and many can mark the occasion by purchasing a book that makes a difference for people battling cancer.

After four years of compiling the words of 67 individuals, “Surviving Cancer: Our Voices and Choices” is available for purchase at http://www.wwhpress.com/order.html and http://amzn.com/0615856004, with 20 percent of all profits going to cancer causes.

The book, which was compiled and illustrated by Marion Behr, includes stories from survivors, doctors, healthcare experts, lead researchers and even a Nobel Prize Laureate. A number of the stories are written by New Jersey residents, including Kathi Edelson Wolder of Scotch Plains.

Wolder tells TAPinto.net, ““I met Marion through my work with Susan G. Komen North Jersey. As a two-time breast cancer survivor, I know what it is to hear those words, 'you have cancer.' At that moment, you feel very much alone. And frightened. When Marion asked me to contribute two articles to the book she was just beginning to compile, I was delighted. It would be a unique resource, she said, that would speak to those facing a cancer diagnosis (not just breast cancer) from all 'voices' along the cancer journey.

"The book is a tremendous achievement, but moreover, it is a work of art, in both the creative and literary senses. By nestling the beauty and symbolism of Marion’s sculptures within a unique source of information, this book sets a new benchmark for future "about cancer" publications: it explores the experiences, emotions and wisdom behind the 'voices,' and provides enormous comfort for anyone fighting cancer,”

The illustrations in the book are photographs of Behr’s sculptures, which use actual radiation cradles as their armature. Each piece represents the moods described by cancer patients during their treatments.
