PATERSON, NJ - A 21-year-old city woman was in critical but stable condition after being stabbed Thursday morning, and the suspect in the case was found hanged in an Elmwood Park hotel room less than four hours later in an apparent suicide.
According to Capt. Heriberto Rodriguez of the Paterson Police, patrol units responded at 7:30 a.m. to a stabbing on Madison Avenue. The victim was found in a first-floor hallway of a Madison Avenue residence, where a neighbor intervened during the attack by physically grabbing and pushing the suspect away from the woman.
The suspect, 36-year-old Manuel Olivo Morillo of 17th Avenue, fled the scene before police arrived.
"Detectives Martinez, Ramos and Sgt. Esposito responded to the scene along with CSI," Rodriguez said. "The victim was admitted to St. Joseph's Hospital in critical but stable condition."
A description of the suspect and his vehicle was announced on SPEN radio. At 11 a.m., Elmwood Park police contacted Paterson police and advised the department that the suspect from the stabbing had been found dead in the Red Carpet Inn hotel at 204 Route 46 East, where he apparently hanged himself.
