AUGUSTA, NJ—The Sussex County Horse Show, held annually at the Sussex County Fairgrounds, is a time-honored tradition and showcase event for the community. The Horse Show is getting national recognition, being included in the 2014 Iconic Horse Shows Across America Exhibit at the USHJA Wheeler Museum.
The Sussex County Horse Show is one of the country’s oldest, running for 78 years beginning in 1919. Originally, it was held at the Branchville Fairgrounds, but moved to the larger venue of Sussex County in 1976. Since 1999, the show has been part of the official New Jersey State Fair. The American Horse Shows Association has officially recognized the horse events in 1950 as upholding high standards. “We are very honored to be among the historic shows chosen,” says Lisa Pellow-Stoner. The Sussex County Horse Show is the only show from New Jersey to be chosen, making this a very special selection.
The USHJA (US Hunter/Jumper Association) Wheeler Museum is located at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky. The museum houses a large collection of equestrian memorabilia, including ribbons, trophies, equipment, and artifacts from the Show Jumping Hall of Fame. It is open year-round, and promotes the education, framework, and well-being of those involved in the sport of horse shows. The 2014 Iconic Horse Shows Across America Exhibit will run from April 15th to December.
The organizers at the USHJA Wheeler Museum have asked for the Sussex County Horse Show to submit items for the display by the opening date of the exhibit on April 15th. Any historical items, articles, or memorabilia from past Sussex County Horse Shows are welcome for submission!
