The Patriots’ Path Council, Boy Scouts of America, annually honors a distinguished citizen at the Sussex County Awards Dinner normally held every October at Perona Farms in Andover. The event recognizes an outstanding citizen for his or her community service, as evidenced by the honoree’s leadership and interests within the Sussex County community, and for his or her embodiment of the values of the century-old Scout Oath and Law in their personal and professional lives.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and current restrictions, the annual fundraising dinner has been postponed to 2021. Although it has been postponed, the need for funding the local Scouting programs is more important than ever. The Patriots’ Path Council, with help from local dedicated community supporters of Scouting, organized a Sussex County COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund to guarantee that, even without fundraising events, Scouting can continue.

The goal for the fund in Sussex County is $225,000 that includes a $75,000 match challenge from an anonymous donor if $75,000 can be raised from past honorees of the Distinguished Citizen award. So far, the Patriots’ Path Council has raised over $65,000 for the campaign. About $100,000 is still needed to reach the campaign goal and to receive the match.

The fund will ensure that every Scout has trained and appropriately screened leaders; packs and troops are organized in new and low-income communities; after-school Scouting units continue to provide mentoring through weekly programs; Scouts can safely continue to give back in service to the community; Scouts can safely earn merit badges; and Youth Protection Training and criminal background checks continue to be done. Financial support through the fund stays in Sussex County and is used to help keep programs and facilities strong.

More information about the campaign can be found at Tax-deductible donations can also be made directly to the fund through this site.
