TRENTON, N.J. — Take A Wish has been named the New Jersey Sire Stakes Horse of the Year for 2018.
The award, which is voted annually by the New Jersey Sire Stakes Board of Trustees, is based solely on performances in races for New Jersey-sired horses, including NJSS-sponsored races and other major stakes for New Jersey-sired or bred horses.
Take A Wish, is a daughter of Wishing Stone, who stood at Deo Volente Farms in Franklin Township, Hunterdon County. She is out of the SJ’s Caviar mare Take A Taste.
She started off her career with a qualifying win but only had one second from three starts and made $4,700 as a 2-year-old..
As a 3-year-old, the filly won three times from 15 starts with three seconds, and six third place finishes. She won the Sire Stakes’ Premier Division at The Meadowlands on June 1 at odds of 21 to 1. In that race she charged down the stretch to nip the favorite, Samis Rolin Stone, at 1-5, by a half-length in 1:55.2.
Take A Wish won the Standardbred Development Fund at Freehold Raceway on Oct. 19. She was the only horse to win two finals and only finished off the board in one of the six Sire Stakes races she started in. She has added more than $90,000 to her bankroll in 2018 and set a mark of 1:55.2.
Dawn Anderson trains the filly and Steve Smith drove her in every start this year, and all but one time in her career.
Take A Wish is owned by Anderson, and Mark Schullstrom of Colts Neck, N.J. She was bred by Rivers Stable of Flemington, N.J.
Take A Wish is from the first crop of Wishing Stone and ranks sixth in earnings among his offspring.
The best of New Jersey’s Standardbreds, New Jersey Thoroughbred of The Year as well as other awards will be presented at the 62nd annual Breeder Awards Luncheon on Jan. 26, 2019 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Hamilton, N.J.
